January 16, 2013: HOUSING AUTHORITY PURCHASED ADDITIONAL LANDS FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
In the past year the Housing Authority purchase two parcels in the Grove Way Neighborhood for future workforce housing development. The first purchase in the summer of 2012 was a .33 acre lot on the corner of Forrest and Norcross streets. It has a single structure on it now used for market rate rental housing. The purchase was made with funds associated with the past issuance of Multi Family Tax exempt Bonds and not with HUD funds. The location is in the mixed use zone of the newly formatted hybrid form based zoning of the neighborhood and is located on what is termed a “high profile corner.”
The next purchase in the fall of 2012 is on Dobbs Drive in the newly zoned Neighborhood Residential category. It was purchased from the VFW William Cobb Post 7583. It constitutes the furthest eastern point of the Grove Way Neighborhood. The parcel is approximately 1.4 acres. The VFW building is being leased back to the organization for use for six months at a nominal price to allow continued service and events until another location can be purchased or rented.
The eventual re-uses of both these properties will contribute to the revitalization of Grove Way and will conform to what is allowed under the Hybrid Form Based Zoning Plan adopted by the City Council in June of 2012.
